We have played with the practically endless variety of Negroni ingredients, trying different vermouths and amari, now we are focusing on the gin.
There are so many great new distilleries popping up that are turning out some very great booze. To let the great flavors of Warwick Gin come through on this Negroni, we changed our standard measurements to favor it. Notice the lighter golden color.
The Gin: Warwick Rustic American Dry Gin
The Vermouth: Cocchi Vermouth di Torino
The Amaro: Amaro Montenegro
More: Stockade Orange Clove Bitters
Warwick Rustic American Dry Gin is made by Master Distiller Jason Grizzanti at Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery in the Hudson Valley. Warwick Valley is the first Hudson Valley distiller to be licensed in NY since prohibition. They are well know for their excellent hard ciders and wines. Jason uses locally grown fruits to craft their spirits. The rustic name is an homage to the historic rural farm region where this gin is crafted.
The flavors are smooth and balanced with enough complexity to become a very interesting Negroni. I used the Cocchi vermouth and the Amaro Montenegro because I believed their full but somewhat reserved flavors would let this gin predominate. I also used less of each.
2 oz Gin, 1 oz Vermouth, 3/4 oz Amaro. My usual is equal parts of each.
A few drops of the Stockade Orange Clove Bitters were a perfect finishing touch. Stockade Farm & Apothecary of Kingston, NY is new. Found their excellent bitters at the Cold Spring Farmer's Market.
Diana who never liked Gin, until we started drinking Negronis in earnest said as she sipped this cocktail, "That is Very Good Gin!"
