Negroni # 75 "My Monkey 47"

Monkey 47 is an unusual and exotic gin made in the Black Forest of Germany, it is created with 47 unique ingredients, stuff that you don't see often in gin. It starts with a pure molasses base spirit with a botanical mix that includes many local German elements including cranberries. It is rich and so full of flavors that it seems a shame to drown it in the pool of vermouth and amaro of a typical Negroni.

My brother in law Perry turned me on to this fabulous spirit, I found mine at a perfect time, as I have become more and more intrigued with more spirits oriented cocktails.

So for this cocktail I did not use a jigger to measure but rather a dropper.

And so it was

2 oz Monkey 47 Gin

8 drops Carpano Antica Vermouth

8 drops Amaro CioCiaro

Exquisite.

Count Camillo Negroni

As to its origin, the most prevalent story is that it was first created in Florence, Italy in 1919, at Caffè Casoni, an antique shop/bar, (think Il Buco) where now Caffè Giacosa is found. As the story goes Count Camillo Negroni asked bartender Fosco Scarselli to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin instead of the typical soda water. Count Pascal Olivier Negroni

Of course like most tales in Italy there is another version of the story. In his one it is told that the drink was invented in 1857 in the West African country of Senegal by Corsican General Pascal Olivier de Negroni.
