Negroni # 86 After Ella's Grapefruit Negroni

We loved this summer version of the ever popular Negroni.

Served at the cute demure cocktail bar that appears after 6:00 at Ella's Bellas gluten free bakery and cafe in Beacon. It's called "After Ella's."

Created by master mixologist and founder and creator of "Drink More Good" Jason Schuler.

It starts with the quintessential Greenhook Ginsmiths gin from our own Brooklyn, NY. A classic American Dry Gin of uncommon quality. Superb alone, with tonic or as a base for cocktails.

It uses a sweet vermouth, and Aperola amaro which is nicely balanced with grapefruit juice. That is nicel

Count Camillo Negroni

As to its origin, the most prevalent story is that it was first created in Florence, Italy in 1919, at Caffè Casoni, an antique shop/bar, (think Il Buco) where now Caffè Giacosa is found. As the story goes Count Camillo Negroni asked bartender Fosco Scarselli to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin instead of the typical soda water. Count Pascal Olivier Negroni

Of course like most tales in Italy there is another version of the story. In his one it is told that the drink was invented in 1857 in the West African country of Senegal by Corsican General Pascal Olivier de Negroni.
