Negroni # 94 Party Time - Ne-Straw-Groni

Ne-Straw-Groni Ingredients

Here is a fun cocktail that is all about the fruit. The tart sweetness of the strawberry melds nicely with the liquor. Great party drink. Could even be done in a big pitcher as a punch, multiply by 10 for a quart of cocktails.

1 oz Bulldog London Dry Gin

1 oz Carpano Antica Vermouth

1/2 oz Amaro Montenegro

1/2 oz St. Germain

Fresh Driscoll Strawberries

Slice the berries and muddle well in the amaro, add ice, vermouth gin, stir very well. 

Served on the rocks with a slice of lemon.

I chose the Carpano Antica because it has softer more nuanced flavors than say Cocchi Torino. Let the strawberry juice stand out. Montenegro because it is a little sweeter less herbaceous than Cynar or Campari.

St. Germain to add another element of flavor that balanced the drink quite well.

  • As to its origin, the most prevalent story is that it was first created in Florence, Italy in 1919, at Caffè Casoni, an antique shop/bar, (think Il Buco) where now Caffè Giacosa is found. As the story goes Count Camillo Negroni asked bartender Fosco Scarselli to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin instead of the typical soda water.   • Of course like most tales in Italy there is another version of the story. In his one it is told that the drink was invented in 1857 in the West African country of Senegal by Corsican General Pascal Olivier de Negroni. They say he created a drink to aide his new wife’s digestion lifting the drink to toast to her health on their wedding day. Negroni family lays claim to namesake cocktail
